    A Study on Exploring People’s Affinity for Solitude

    This study sought to investigate solitude as a phenomenon. People’s affinity for solitude and the antecedents of affinity for solitude were of crucial interest to the study because affinity for solitude has been considered a strong determinant of solitude behavior. Based on the review of existing solitude studies, major constructs believed to comprise an empirical model were theoretically and operationally defined: affinity for solitude, general attitudes toward solitude, subjective norms, perceived control, extraversion, intended solitude behavior, and actual solitude behavior. The relationships among latent factors were hypothesized for empirical tests. A questionnaire was designed to measure the above constructs. Several items were based on previous studies although several items were developed by the investigator. A total of 395 college students, 162 male and 233 female students completed an online survey in exchange for extra credit. Preliminary analysis indicated the internal consistency of the battery of measurement scales used in this study were highly reliable; the measurement test also provided empirical evidence of the construct validity of the developed measures. A test of the hypothesized model of people’s affinity for solitude revealed that there were well-defined path relationships between latent factors with a good fit between the measures and the sample data. Findings revealed that general attitudes toward solitude and subjective norms positively contributed to affinity for solitude; while extraversion negatively influenced affinity for solitude. Affinity for solitude effectively predicted intended solitude behavior and actual solitude behavior. Additionally, the study found that subjective norms and general attitudes toward solitude also significantly predicted intended solitude behavior. A model of people’s affinity for solitude and solitude behavior allowed us to analytically view the latent social and cognitive factors that significantly inform people’s affinity for solitude and their solitude behavior. This study is valuable in two ways. First, theoretical and empirical approaches derived from this current study suggest ways of conceptualizing solitude attitudes and behavior. Second, study findings account for the antecedents and consequences of affinity for solitude. Theoretical relations and several implications associated with college students and recreation management were presented. Additionally, the limitations of the study followed by suggestions for improvements and possible directions for future research were discussed

    FoX: Formation-aware exploration in multi-agent reinforcement learning

    Recently, deep multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has gained significant popularity due to its success in various cooperative multi-agent tasks. However, exploration still remains a challenging problem in MARL due to the partial observability of the agents and the exploration space that can grow exponentially as the number of agents increases. Firstly, in order to address the scalability issue of the exploration space, we define a formation-based equivalence relation on the exploration space and aim to reduce the search space by exploring only meaningful states in different formations. Then, we propose a novel formation-aware exploration (FoX) framework that encourages partially observable agents to visit the states in diverse formations by guiding them to be well aware of their current formation solely based on their own observations. Numerical results show that the proposed FoX framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art MARL algorithms on Google Research Football (GRF) and sparse Starcraft II multi-agent challenge (SMAC) tasks.Comment: 7 pages main, 5 pages appendix with reference. 10 figures, submitted for AAA

    Dirichlet process approach for radio-based simultaneous localization and mapping

    Due to 5G millimeter wave (mmWave), spatial channel parameters are becoming highly resolvable, enabling accurate vehicle localization and mapping. We propose a novel method of radio simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with the Dirichlet process (DP). The DP, which can estimate the number of clusters as well as clustering, is capable of identifying the locations of reflectors by classifying signals when such 5G signals are reflected and received from various objects. We generate birth points using the measurements from 5G mmWave signals received by the vehicle and classify objects by clustering birth points generated over time. Each time we use the DP clustering method, we can map landmarks in the environment in challenging situations where false alarms exist in the measurements and change the cardinality of received signals. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme. By comparing the results with the SLAM based on the Rao-Blackwellized probability hypothesis density filter, we confirm a slight drop in SLAM performance, but as a result, we validate that it has a significant gain in computational complexity

    Examination of Environmental Factors Influencing the Emission Rates of Semivolatile Organic Compounds

    Some types of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) that are emitted from plastics used in building materials and household appliances have been associated with health risks, even at low concentrations. It has been reported that di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)—one of the most commonly used plasticizers—causes asthma and allergic symptoms in children at home. The amount of emitted DEHP, which is classified as a SVOC, can be measured using a microchamber by the thermal desorption test chamber method. To accurately measure the SVOC emission rates, the relation between SVOC and environmental factors should be clarified. Herein, we examined the effects of the temperature, relative humidity, concentration of airborne particles, and flow field in the microchamber on SVOC emission rates. The flow fields inside the microchamber were analyzed via computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The emission rate of SVOC released from PVC flooring increased under high temperatures and at high concentrations of airborne particles but did not depend on the relative humidity. From an evaluation performed using an index of air change efficiency, such as the air age and the coefficient of air change performance, we found that a fixed air exchange rate of 1.5 h−1 in the microchamber is desirable

Because of increased usage of the cellular phone, the available time of the phone rechargeable battery is getting shorter. Therefore, in order to extend the serviceable time of the rechargeable battery, we propose self-generation system using a tubular type of permanent magnet linear self-generator (TPMLG) which can be embedded in cellular phone. The vibrational model is studied utilizing the mechanical resonance and the magnetic circuit such as permanent magnet, steel yoke and coil is designed to improve electricity generation.     WHAT\textit{WHAT}, WHEN\textit{WHEN}, and HOW\textit{HOW} to Ground: Designing User Persona-Aware Conversational Agents for Engaging Dialogue

    This paper presents a method for building a personalized open-domain dialogue system to address the WWH\textit{WWH} (WHAT\textit{WHAT}, WHEN\textit{WHEN}, and HOW\textit{HOW}) problem for natural response generation in a commercial setting, where personalized dialogue responses are heavily interleaved with casual response turns. The proposed approach involves weighted dataset blending, negative persona information augmentation methods, and the design of personalized conversation datasets to address the challenges of WWH\textit{WWH} in personalized, open-domain dialogue systems. Our work effectively balances dialogue fluency and tendency to ground, while also introducing a response-type label to improve the controllability and explainability of the grounded responses.
